In a word, globalize. Consider the world economy and how the Internet lets you tap into any country that has both customers for your products or services and money to buy them.
You can see the story of “international growth, domestic weakness” over and over again. For instance Caterpillar reported that their sales volume was up $787 million with most of the gain coming from outside the US. Revenue outside North America grew from 55 to 6o percent compared to the same quarter last year. This included increases in Asia Pacific, Africa, the Middle Ease, Commonwealth of Independent States and Latin America.
GM sales were up 10 percent internationally, including 20 percent in the Brazil, Russian, India, and China, while Ford announced that it earned profits in every region except North America. PepsiCo International grew over 20 percent in revenue and over 30 percent in profit from the prior year with the weak dollar actually helping PepsiCo sales in the nearly 200 countries in which the company offers products such as Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Aquafina, Lay’s, and Quaker.
While the examples cited above are for big companies that already have global infrastructure, that doesn’t mean that you can’t follow in their global footsteps. Even on a small scale, if you do your homework and match your company’s products or services to a country with a strong economy or even a currency that is strong against the dollar, you have a big opportunity to increase your sales.
The first step after locating your best international markets is to add culturally appropriate content in the language of your international viewers to your existing website and have your basic marketing materials translated. Then you can send out sales letters to prospects and press releases to trade journals that serve your industry here and in the other country. You may even want to contact sales representatives who would work on a commission to present your products to prospects in their home country.
